LPI Capital Bhd has announced a net profit of RM6.686mil for the second quarter ended June 2026, delivering a combined dividend payout of 90 cents per share to shareholders comprising a first interim dividend of 25 cents and a special dividend of 65 cents per share. The special component reflects proceeds from the company's earlier disposal of 220.29 million shares, returning capital to investors despite underlying operational headwinds that have tempered the group's profitability trajectory during the six-month period.

The group's quarterly revenue advanced to RM545.22mil from RM507.64mil in the corresponding quarter of 2025, driven predominantly by stronger performance in the general insurance segment. However, this top-line growth masks deteriorating margins in the group's most volatile business line, with underwriting results facing significant pressure from claims inflation and inadequate pricing across motor classes. Over the first half of the financial year, LPI Capital's cumulative net profit declined to RM166.39mil from RM181.15mil in the equivalent period of the previous year, signalling an erosion of earnings despite revenue climbing to RM1.09bil against RM1.02bil previously.

Lonpac Insurance Bhd Group, LPI Capital's wholly-owned insurance subsidiary and core earnings engine, experienced a marked contraction in profitability during the quarter. Pre-tax earnings fell 18.1% year-on-year to RM91.2mil compared with RM111.4mil achieved in the second quarter of 2025. This decline reflects both operational challenges in the underwriting segment and unfavourable movements in financial asset valuations. The subsidiary recorded a net fair value loss of RM1.8mil in the current quarter, a sharp reversal from the RM10.5mil net fair value gain recorded in the prior year period, indicating the impact of volatile market conditions on the group's investment portfolio.

Despite the profit contraction, Lonpac demonstrated resilience in premium generation, with gross written premiums expanding 6.9% to RM490.6mil from RM458.8mil in the prior year quarter. This organic growth trajectory demonstrates the group's ability to expand its customer base and product penetration, yet the company's insurance service result retreated 6.9% year-on-year to RM81.2mil, signalling that the gains from higher premium volume have been insufficient to offset deteriorating claims experience and elevated loss ratios across the portfolio.

The motor insurance segment has emerged as the primary source of margin compression for the group, with the net claims incurred ratio deteriorating to 46.6% in the quarter from 43.9% in the prior year period. This 270 basis point deterioration reflects multiple structural challenges within Malaysia's motor insurance market that have accumulated over recent quarters. The group has identified three key drivers of the adverse claims experience: a measurable increase in accident frequency across Malaysian roads, escalating court awards in third-party bodily injury liability claims reflecting inflationary pressures and changing judicial interpretations, and systematic underpricing of certain motor business segments that fail to reflect the true risk profile and expected loss costs.

LPI Capital's management has acknowledged that these motor underwriting challenges necessitate a recalibration of the group's approach to this traditionally high-volume segment. The company has adopted a more conservative underwriting philosophy, tightening risk selection criteria and declining or repricing business that does not meet enhanced profitability thresholds. Simultaneously, the group is intensifying its focus on improving claims administration practices and deploying data analytics to better identify fraud and manage loss severity. The motor portfolio currently accounts for less than 25% of the group's total gross written premiums, providing some insulation to overall profitability, but management intends to strategically expand exposure within this segment by targeting more profitable customer segments and deploying selective distribution channels rather than pursuing undifferentiated volume growth.

In contrast to the motor segment's weakness, Lonpac's fire insurance portfolio has demonstrated superior performance relative to industry benchmarks. The group attributes this outperformance to its carefully constructed portfolio composition, which balances exposure across residential properties, small and medium-sized enterprises, and large-scale commercial and industrial risks. This diversification strategy reduces concentration risk and provides stability through economic cycles, distinguishing Lonpac's fire business from competitors with more skewed exposure to individual segments. The group's fire portfolio benefits from conservative underwriting practices and active engagement with brokers and corporate clients to ensure appropriate pricing of risk.

Moving forward, management has signalled its intention to pursue organic and inorganic growth initiatives to strengthen market position in fire insurance and adjacent lines. The company plans to explore strategic partnerships with international insurance groups to access new sources of direct foreign investment and tap global reinsurance relationships that enhance capacity and risk management flexibility. Additionally, LPI Capital intends to intensify cross-selling initiatives in collaboration with PBB Group, its parent entity, to leverage group-wide distribution capabilities and broaden its customer relationships across complementary insurance and financial services offerings. These strategic initiatives are designed to diversify revenue streams beyond the challenged motor segment and establish Lonpac as a preferred provider across multiple insurance lines in the Malaysian market.
