Raja Perempuan Zainab Hospital II (HRPZ II) in Kota Bharu is set to undergo a major infrastructure upgrade with the construction of a RM175 million pathology laboratory, marking a significant investment in Kelantan's healthcare modernisation. The project will commence next year and is projected to span four to five years before the facility becomes operational, replacing the hospital's ageing diagnostic infrastructure with contemporary medical technology.

Deputy Health Director-General (Medical) Datuk Dr Mohd Azman Yacob announced the development during the opening of the 21st Annual Scientific Meeting of the College of Pathologists at the Academy of Medicine in Kota Bharu. The laboratory expansion reflects broader efforts within Malaysia's public healthcare system to centralise advanced diagnostic capabilities and reduce operational constraints that have historically limited testing capacity in East Coast states. The new facility will substantially augment HRPZ II's ability to process complex pathology samples and support clinical decision-making across the region.

Beyond the laboratory itself, the construction project encompasses auxiliary infrastructure designed to enhance operational efficiency and patient experience. The development will incorporate 125 additional parking bays to address long-standing congestion issues at the hospital, alongside 40 beds allocated for first-class ward accommodation. These ancillary components underscore the Ministry of Health's holistic approach to facility upgrades, recognising that diagnostic centres require adequate support systems to function effectively within the broader hospital ecosystem.

This staggered approach allows the Ministry to manage capital expenditure whilst progressively enhancing diagnostic capacity across the country's diverse geography and healthcare demand patterns.
