Two scientists from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu have obtained a substantial international research grant valued at RM3.9 million to undertake a comprehensive mangrove restoration programme across Malaysia. The funding will support a three-year initiative beginning in July 2026 and concluding in June 2029, with the research team led by Associate Prof Dr Behara Satyanarayana of the Institute of Oceanography and Environment and Dr Giovanna Wolswijk from the Faculty of Marine Science and Environment.

The Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate, operating under the United Kingdom's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has awarded the grant for the REVIVE initiative, which carries the full designation of Just Restoration and Equitable Value Chains for Inclusive, Viable Mangrove Ecosystems: The Case of Malaysia. This naming reflects a holistic approach that extends beyond traditional conservation to encompass socioeconomic dimensions often overlooked in environmental restoration efforts.

The research will concentrate on four strategically significant mangrove regions within Malaysia's coastal geography. These include the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Perak, one of the nation's largest remaining mangrove areas, alongside the Sungai Acheh and Sungai Chenaam riverine systems in Penang, and the Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu, which represent crucial biodiversity hotspots along the peninsula's eastern coast. The geographic spread underscores recognition that mangrove degradation represents a nationwide challenge requiring coordinated attention across multiple states.

The project's conceptual framework distinguishes it from conventional restoration approaches by embedding community economic development within environmental recovery objectives. Dr Wolswijk emphasised that the initiative aims to construct a restoration model capable of simultaneously revitalising degraded ecosystems whilst enhancing the material circumstances of coastal populations dependent on mangrove-adjacent resources. The Setiu Wetlands, for instance, comprise approximately 6,000 hectares of mangrove and mudflat habitats supporting globally significant concentrations of migratory wading birds, yet face mounting pressures from encroachment and development proposals. Similarly, the Matang reserve, despite formal protection status, requires adaptive management strategies to address changing environmental conditions and conflicting resource use demands.
